This is our 2nd clutch of axolotl babies with a 3rd clutch still in there eggs. The 2nd clutch hatched on the 20th February and are very nearly ready to go - There hind legs are slowly coming in and there almost 2 inches in length.Once they're established they will need new homes. They will be established when they have fully grown hind legs & are at least 3 inches long. They require a tank which is long rather than tall with plenty of hiding spacesThey usually live alone as they can be quite aggressive but ours are bonded now so live quite happily together - Which can happen too.The great thing with axolotls is if there well looked after (and they don't require much care) they can live for 10+ years. Also if they have a tank mate they may fight but they can regenerate there limbs!Tank prep :-We keep ours without sand/gravel because they are gannets and will eat it which in return could cause a harmful blockage. We have hiding places and plants (the plants are essential for the laying of there spawn)And a filter - No need for a heater & they can even live in pondsFood :- they start on frozen blood worm when you get them home then move on to pellets and the occasional live shrimp which helps maintain a clean tank whilst being food to catch too

Are axolotls good pets? ›

They can be great pets, but they aren't great pets for everyone – and children need to know that they can't handle an axolotl as they're very delicate and they can get injured. They also need a very quiet home with a lot of space – children aren't known to be very quiet”, Dr Beattie correctly says.

Are axolotls amphibians or reptiles? ›

Mexican axolotl salamanders are amphibians that spend their whole lives underwater.

Where do you get axolotls? ›

At Axolotl Planet, we have many different morphs available for sale. We take great care to track the lineage of each of our axolotls, which helps to keep a high degree of genetic variation in our stocks.

Why can't you touch axolotls? ›

Handling axolotls can cause them stress, which may weaken their immune system and make them more susceptible to disease. Reducing physical contact helps maintain their well-being and longevity.

What is the lifespan of a axolotl? ›

The axolotl lifespan is 10 to 15 years.

Is it OK to hold an axolotl? ›

In fact, most of their body is made of cartilage rather than bone. That means they should not be handled unless absolutely necessary. And if you do have to move them out of their tank, do so with a fine mesh net that won't entangle any of their body parts.

What does an axolotl eat? ›

A healthy diet for an axolotl includes various insect larvae, worms, and crustaceans. Most axolotl foods are readily available and affordable. Pet parents who want a constant food supply for their axolotl can even culture or grow their own brine shrimp, earthworms, and water fleas (daphnia).

Do axolotls love their owners? ›

Axolotls are very curious and appear to recognize their owners as food providers. It is common for these salamanders to actively swim toward people outside their tank. They are surprisingly interactive, but should never be handled as being taken out of the water is extremely stressful.

What do axolotls turn into? ›

Hawaii and New Mexico both allow axolotls to be owned as pets after obtaining the proper permits. All other states allow axolotls to be owned with no permits.

Should axolotls be kept in pairs? ›

In the wild, axolotls are solitary animals, and so are happy being kept on their own. If multiple axolotls are to be kept together, enough space should be given for each one to have its own area away from others. Axolotls are messy animals, and sensitive to poor water quality.

How expensive is an axolotl? ›

However, they are usually inexpensive. A healthy Axolotl costs about $80. An exotic version would cost approximately $140. Getting this aquatic animal is still cheaper than creating an ideal habitat.

Are axolotls easy to care for for beginners? ›

Once you have their housing setup correct, you generally only have to spend a few hours per week on feeding and cleaning. The rest is simply enjoying them as a quiet aquatic companion. Axolotls tend to be fairly bold and are perfectly content to move about their tank as they're being watched by their humans.

What are the disadvantages of axolotls? ›

Cons of having an axolotl:

Sensitive to water quality: Axolotls are very sensitive to water quality and require a clean and stable environment to thrive. This means that you will need to do regular water changes and test the water to make sure it is within the proper parameters.

Why are axolotls so hard to keep alive? ›

Axolotls are not easy pets to keep. This is mainly due to their need to be kept below room temperature, with a water chiller or clip-on fans, and their high frequency of developing diseases and illnesses.

How long does an axolotl last? ›

An axolotl can live on average for around 10-15 years, although it can depend greatly on any threats to its habitat. In some cases, their ability to regrow limbs can help them to live longer, as they're able to regenerate. In the wild, axolotls will breed once a year, usually around February.
