THE HARTFORD COURANT: Wadnedoy, Januory 31, 199Q F5 Waterbury gets college summer-league franchise By DOM AMORE Courant Staff Writer WATERBURY One visit was all it took to convince commissioner John Belson that Waterbury belonged in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League. "I came up here last November," Belson said. "All I knew was that there were people here with a baseball team. The next thing I know, I'm in the mayor's office, then in the parks commission. They're asking, 'What do you need, what do you "Well, that's a lot different than other cities I've been dealing with." As a result, the Waterbury Collegians, a 4-year-old amateur organ year's eligibility remaining.

Teams are allowed no more than four players from any one college on a roster. "That should be no problem at all," Yuskas said. "Last year, we had 22 colleges represented by our 25 players." The Yankees figure to draw players from UConn, Quinnipiac, the University of Hartford and the University of New Haven, along with others schools in the Northeast. Major League Baseball contributes money for these leagues, which is distributed by the NCAA's subcommittee on summer baseball. "There are 35,000 collegiate players in the United States," said UConn coach Andy Baylock, who NCAA Northeast Regional, played in Waterbury, was the most financially, in the tournament's history.

The All-Star game between the ACBL and the Northeastern Collegiate Baseball League, played in Waterbury in August, was so well-received that both leagues considered adding Waterbury. "We had to do very little convincing to our other coaches," Belson said. "They'd say, 'Oh, Waterbury. Great field. Great people." There are eight NCAA-sanctioned summer leagues in the United States; the Cape Cod League is the best known.

Players must have completed at least one year of college baseball, and have at least one ization, has changed its name to the Connecticut Yankees and, beginning this season, will play in the ACBL an NCAA-sanctioned summer league subsidized by Major League Baseball. The move was announced at a news conference Tuesday morning in the office of Mayor Joseph J. Santopietro. The Connecticut Yankees will begin playing at Municipal Stadium in early June. "We're just ecstatic," said Dick Yuskas, coach, shaker and mover of the CollegiansYankees.

"I don't see any obstacles. Every year, we've moved forward." Aside from the enthusiasm of city officials, two other factors were in Waterbury's favor. Last spring's Waterbury Baseball Committee in 1986, began as an unaffiliated team playing in whatever tournaments it could. It joined the New England Baseball League and All-American Amateur Baseball Association in 1988, and last season finished second in the AAABA National Championships in Johnstown, Pa. Among the Collegians' alumni are 1988 first-round draft picks Rico Brogna of Watertown (Detroit Tigers) and Charles Nagy of UConn (Cleveland Indians).

Former Collegians Steve DeBartolomeo (Seattle Mariners) and Bob Boisvert (Chicago Cubs) were drafted last year. Yuskas says the team's four-year record is 56-17 and it has averaged 300-400 fans a game. chairs the subcommittee. "Not all of them can get into the Cape Cod League it only takes 180 players. This will offer college players from Connecticut a great opportinity." The ACBL has four franchises in New York Brooklyn, Baldwin, Ramapo and Uniondale), two in New Jersey Teaneck and North Plainfield and two in Pennsylvania Dunmore and Quakertown.

The league plays a 40-game schedule. "With a lot of the towns, the scouts in the stands outnumber the parents and fans," Belson said. "Here in Waterbury (as opposed to larger metropolitan areas such as Brooklyn, attendance might be more important."
