(AP) The president of the Kanawha County Board of Education resigned Thursday after more than a month of controversy over use of some English textbooks. The president, Albert Anson, resigned at a meeting of the school board, saying he still believed there was nothing wrong with the textbooks which have led to demonstrations, scattered violence, school boycotts, work shutdowns and arrests in the county since school began Sept.

3. School and law enforcement officials said attendance at the county schools was 79 per cent on Thursday, with no reports of violence. Sheriffs' deputies accompanied school buses, which traveled in pairs on main roads. One school was dynamited and another set on fire Wednesday and deputies were out in force Thursday to prevent similar incidents.
